What exactly does Xbox live gold membership offer over silver?

I'm going to get an Xbox 360 and xbox live soon and I'm wondering what exactly makes gold status better than silver status. The xbox site wasn't very clear.

Also, what is the difference in the cost?

The silver is free. As long as you are connected to the internet and agree to the terms and conditions, it is yours. With this, you can download movies, music, talk to friends, etc. The gold is what you need if you want to play your games online. Most games now have an online multiplayer. It is $50 dollars a year, and honestly it is worth it. Gears of War, Halo 3, Left 4 Dead, Call of Duty 4 are just some of the game that you can play online. Not only can you play competitively, but many games have co-op online also. hope this helps
Xbox silver is free. When you hook up an internet connection you atomaticly have silver. But on the homepage it says join Xbox live everywhere and you can sign up and when it says how long you want it for there is a free trial fr 30 days. Its rlly cool. I hope this helped. HAPPY GAMING!!

Gold and Silver. In the silver membership, you can do everything you can in the gold membership but play online. In the gold you can do everything and play online. The gold goes for 8$ for one month, 20$ for 3 months, and 50$ for one year. Gold Rocks! You get a free trial so see if you like it! in live it lets you do everything the silver does and also lets u play online against friends.

in other words if u want to be able to play with friends like 99% of ppl want u have to get the gold.
Gold members are able to get some downloads earlier than Silver members, and Gold members are able to play multiplayer games online.
