How can I connect my Xbox 360 to Xbox live?

I'm having problems connecting my Xbox to Xbox live. I have a Linksys wireless router and my DS and Wii connected to it just fine, but when I go to create my Xbox live account, it says that the wireless adapter is disconnected. What I did was connect my router directly to my xbox, and ran my computer wirelessly, it saved me the 110 dollar adapter.
