Most people in Europe when they send their 360 in for repair to their Microsoft europe place they actually receive a brand new one in return. At one point the the postal system in the UK reported that over 500 360s a day were being sent back to Microsoft.
This is costing Microsoft huge amounts of money. And when you think that 1 and 3 owners have had at least one 360 replaced and some have had up to 3 replaced this would mean that Microsoft has recieved less then $100 for each of the three 360 they sent to the same owner. If the owner has only had one sent in then the that owner has had 2 new 360 for one original purchase price of $300 to $400 or so dollars .
Now look at total 360s shipped take 1/3 off and that is how many people actually own a 360 in the home. Now add in the cost to refurbish, Materials and labor cost each 360 sent in in the States is costing Microsoft.
Microsoft has also had lawsuits filed against them for disc scratching and RROD. So I would imagine that Microsoft is doing far worse then just trying to allude that they are doing the consumer a favor by building a system with old technology at what they call a loss.

I had this exact same problem lately, what I did was change the type of connection (there are a few) I forget what they are but they are in the set up of your wifi. I changed mine to something that I would get better reception, higher definition, and much faster (perfect for Xbox Live).

Oh yeah, and if your Xbox 360 is plugged into your computer (because you can use your computer as a wireless adapter, you just plug it in, and connect your computer to you home network) then you should probably think about buying a wireless adapter, specifically for your Xbox, they are a little bit more money then you would think ($99, thats what I payed for mine). I have the router closest too my xbox 360 and at first I had it hard wired to the router which worked fine and I also assigned it it's own channel. I haven't had any problems whatsoever since doing this. I then sometimes like to take my 360 to other rooms with me so the downfall was that i had to buy the wireless adapter for the 360 (84.00) and a wireless card for my computer (44.00). I have the router set so the 360 has it's own channel and anything else goes on a default channel so if my 360 is running, my desktop, and a laptop the 360 will be by itself and anything else will be on a default channel.
HINT if you get the wireless adapter get the Xbox one, it automatically will find any wireless connection and use the strongest one unless you specify differently. I bought an aftermarket one at first and you have to spend time typing codes and junk and it was a pain..

It is $50 dollars a year, and honestly it is worth it. Gears of War, Halo 3, Left 4 Dead, Call of Duty 4 are just some of the game that you can play online. Unfortunately you can't. I had the exact same problem and I searched every nook %26amp; cranny but found no answer other than creating a new account. This can hurt, my old account was in Gold and had 10000 gamerscore with 5/5 reputation. This IS the only way no matter what your Xbox Live/Family/Console settings are. If you have Gold, don't throw your money away, wait until it finishes THEN make a new account. I did this back in February and had to replay ALL my games to get my rep/gamerscore back but I'm already at 7000 gamerscore + I go to school + I have a job + I have a pet so that's not bad considering how busy I can get. It may be gut wrenching to move on to a new account but it's the only way and at 13 you will probably have plenty of time to get your old status back (if that matters to you).
NOTE: Formerly, you COULD download M rated content as long as your settings were right but due to an update (it's pretty old now, like pre-NXE in 2008 or something) Microsoft changed this policy about under-aged people downloading mature content.How can you download content onto your xbox from xbox live when the rating is M and you are to young to buy?

Now, ethernet cables. I'm pretty sure you can use any one. You might have some lying around somewhere. You might also need a router. It allows you to hook up multiple computers (or an xbox) to your modem at the same time. I'd recommend going to an electronic store and getting them to help you figure things out.
So, if you have the hardware, (router, cables, tv, xbox, computer, modem) an activation code, and a credit card, things should work alright.
Hooking up an original is much harder than hooking up a 360 to live. 360s come with pretty much everything you need, and in all honesty, it's probably a much better idea to get a 360. But, if caught, your Xbox will be banned, and you won't be able to play online or anything.

Playing games without the cd's anymore for the xbox 360 is possible, it is called JTAG. by applying JTAG to your console you can also place a bigger hard disk drive (up to 2TB), install homebrew(emulators,and the like) and a lot more. By doing this, you must not connect to xbox live or go online because once Microsoft detects that your console is hacked, they will ban your console making it unplayable. There are processes to "unban" your console but they will take long procedures to do, and it's not guaranteed to work. JTAG your console, then stay offline, no problems.
Search through google, but before that, WHAT you should know though, JTAG has requirements. You shouldn't have updated your console, and your dashboard version should be lower than 2.8.

Playing games without the cd's anymore for the xbox 360 is possible, it is called JTAG. by applying JTAG to your console you can also place a bigger hard disk drive (up to 2TB), install homebrew(emulators,and the like) and a lot more. By doing this, you must not connect to xbox live or go online because once Microsoft detects that your console is hacked, they will ban your console making it unplayable. There are processes to "unban" your console but they will take long procedures to do, and it's not guaranteed to work. JTAG your console, then stay offline, no problems.
Search through google, but before that, WHAT you should know though, JTAG has requirements. You shouldn't have updated your console, and your dashboard version should be lower than 2.8.

The problem you are encountering is caused by a failed update.
What happened is that your xbox was updating from one of the games you had put into the console but got shut off before the update was complete. There are two ways of trying to clear the failed update, neither are guaranteed to work and one you have to call microsoft for the console specific code.
Clear Any Failed system updates that cause the console to error.
With the console off, press and hold the sync up button (the small white one)
While holding the sync button press the power button to turn on the console
Continue to hold the sync button until the Console has booted up completely.
During the boot process the console should clear any failed updates, allowing you to use it normally.
Another way to try and fix it is putting in your most recent played games and starting the xbox up and seeing it will work.

10). PS3 online is free, Xbox 360 - you have to pay.
11). On PS3 you can install other OS, such as Linux Yellow Dog, Ubuntu and others. Sony officially lets you do it. There is no such thing in 360.
12). PS3 HDD can be replaced easily with any 2.5" SATA 5400 RPM HDD (used in laptops). 250 GB will cost you around 170$. In 360 you have to buy exclusive HDD, where 20GB will cost you 100$.
13.)Sony expects PS3 to stay on the market for, at least, 7-10 years. Also Sony reduces price now. There is a cheaper 40GB version of PS3.
14).Sony constantly upgrades PS3 software (free updates for OS) - you get new functions and improvements.
